Free and Fair? Really?
June 19, 2008 – 11:19 amI don’t know anymore. Up to a short while ago, I actually had hope left for Zimbabwe and some sort of peaceful outcome. Now… I’m not so sure.
That Mugabe-thing has got to go. Obvious statement, I know – but let’s break it down. This guy, one of 84 years, is implementing violent control measures in order to ‘sway’ (coerce) voters into keeping him in power. What I DON’T get though, is how Thabo Mbeki can go there, suss out the situation and come back saying things don’t look good but no one is to blame. I mean, come on Mister ‘President’, strap on a pair if you don’t have any and stand up to Mugabe.
In this game you cannot afford to show weakness – if you disagree with how someone is running their country, at least mention it even if you’re unable to do anything about it. At least you’ll gain the respect of the people you are in charge of leading.
And I know diplomacy requires that, as an outsider, you don’t get involved – but surely someone out there must have a plan in place to help the situation out – even if it’s sending a special-ops team to ‘take him out’ (as they say in the movies).
Once again – tell me if I’m full of crap…
